Audre Lorde once said “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.” As a therapist, it concerns me that self-care is one of those phrases that gets bandied about carelessly and is now used to describe everything from bath bombs to overpriced salads at chain restaurants. Truly caring for oneself goes a bit deeper.

I enlisted to serve in the U.S. Navy in June of 2011 and shipped off to boot camp at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, IL in January 2012. After completing boot camp, A-school, and C-school, (14 months of training) to be an Aviation Electronics Technician (AT), I was assigned to Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron One (VQ-1) at NAS Whidbey Island in Oak Harbor, WA. During my enlistment, I completed five detachments, two of which were in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

As 2018 comes to a close, I’ve been reflecting on the past year’s work. This year has been a roller coaster for trans people across the country, and Louisiana was no different. We’ve suffered losses and celebrated triumphs. What’s really marked this year for me, though, was that we’ve experienced a massive investment of time and talents from trans Louisianans and our allies.
